The Lady with the Pet Dog
Comparison of two stories of the same name A story of two lovers in an affair is never a simple thing to understand. Anton Chekhov original and Joyce Carol Oatesââ¬â¢s updated version of ââ¬Å"The Lady with the Pet Dogâ⬠tells the story of two unhappy individuals trying to find love in a long lasting affair. Both versions of the story are similar in plot, but the different point of view allows readers to view the conflicts and emotions that each character faces, instead of just getting one side of the story. Although both stories follow the same plot, there are many differences that help readers understand the emotions of the protagonist.Chekhovââ¬â¢s version of ââ¬Å"The Lady with the Pet Dogâ⬠the main protagonist is a male named Dmitry Gurov. The third person point of view allows readers to only see how Gurovââ¬â¢s emotions throughout the story and not his love interest Anna. Gurov is an unfaithful husband and views women as the ââ¬Å"inferior raceâ⬠(Ch ekhov 205). He has been through many affairs in Moscow that he already knows that the affair will grow into an ââ¬Å"extreme complexityâ⬠(205) and when the end comes a ââ¬Å"painful situation is createdâ⬠(205).In Oates version the protagonist is Anna, who is not as timid as she appears in Chekhovââ¬â¢s version. Anna doesnââ¬â¢t know what it feels like to have a bond with a person, because she canââ¬â¢t seem to connect with her husband. The affair allows Anna some freedom from her boring life and allows her to have some purpose in life. Yet she feels guilty for being in an affair with a stranger. The plot in Chekhovââ¬â¢s version is very straight forward being in chronological order, whereas Oates mixes the plot around starting with the climax first. They share the same climax of the theater, but in both stories Anna reacts differently when seeing her lover appear to see her. In Chekhovââ¬â¢s version, Anna is shocked by Gurovââ¬â¢s appearance. She tells him that she is suffering and thinks only about him, but wants to forget everything that happened. Yet she is knows she wants to be with him so she promises to see him in Moscow and tells him to leave. While in Oatesââ¬â¢s version, Anna is shocked and very unpleased with seeing her lover, and makes sure he doesnââ¬â¢t come near her.Her lover then calls her, and we see that Anna get frustrated with him for calling her. We can see that Oates was trying to give Anna a little more power in the affair unlike Chekhov. The mix of the plot in Oatesââ¬â¢s version I feel allows readers to really understand Anna and her emotions. It wouldââ¬â¢ve been easier to understand if it was in order, but Oates took the same story and updated it and wrote it in a way that made it much different from Chekhovââ¬â¢s. She gave Anna life and we got to see how the guilt ate at her, while Gurov wasnââ¬â¢t really affected as bad as she was in Chekhovââ¬â¢s.I had to read Oatesââ¬â¢s story more than once to get the story into order, which allowed me to think more about Annaââ¬â¢s feelings more then I could do if I only read it once. In both stories the protagonist are stuck in unhappy marriages, but neither actually make an effort to divorce. The setting of Chekhovââ¬â¢s version takes place at the turn of the century, so I feel maybe divorce wasnââ¬â¢t an option for both characters then. Yet Oates had her story take place in the 1970ââ¬â¢s, which happened to be a time of feminism, which to my surprise Anna never thought about leaving her husband for her lover. The confusing emotions from an unhappy marriage and guilt drove Anna crazy. She would ponder ââ¬Å"this is fateâ⬠¦to be here and not there, to be one person and not another, a certain manââ¬â¢s wife and not the wife of another manâ⬠(222). We could tell she just wants to be accepted from someone, and that was her lover. The guilt of cheating even on a broken marriage drove her to tell he r lover that she wished that one of her men would die, so it could make things easier on her. In each story we find that the protagonist finds some sort of love in the end of the story.Chekhovââ¬â¢s character Gurov, sees his wife as ââ¬Å"limited intelligence, narrow minded and dowdyâ⬠(205). Anna seems to be the opposite of his wife, which makes him even more attractive to her. Gurov has been in many affairs, but each time he was left lonely, because he was focused on looking for the sexual aspect of the relationship and not the emotional. Anna allowed him to open up emotionally, giving him someone to talk to. In the end Gurov knew he was growing old and that he truly for the first time actually loved someone.Oatesââ¬â¢s Anna, has been through a lot of confusion never knowing who she loved. She almost commits suicide and gives up on her relationship. It takes her sometime, but she finally learns to accept her lover and the secrets. Anna was looking for her own identity and love, but she had to learn to love herself first before she could love anyone else. With the third person point of view we are limited to so much information, but Oatesââ¬â¢s adaption sheds light on the other half of the story. A one sided story wouldââ¬â¢ve left readers with a lot of questions concerning Anna.Itââ¬â¢s like they made the affair seem so easy in Chekhovââ¬â¢s version, but we find out that they struggled just like any couple would. Although the stories shared many similarities they did have their difference in approach. Works Cited Chekhov, Anton. ââ¬Å"The Lady with the Pet Dog. â⬠The Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature. Characteristic of Good Co-Worker Essay
When you work at a company, your colleagues obviously constitute an important factor that conduce to an interesting or horrible job. As far as Iââ¬â¢m concerned, a great colleague is an enthusiastic, responsible, and friendly person. To begin with, I believe that an enthusiastic worker will not only accomplish his or her tasks quickly but also be able to foster other people who collaborate with him or her . This is because when I was previously working in a software development team, one of my teammates always showed zeal for our projects. He agreed to do every tasks that team leader gave to. In addition, he normally finished the tasks earlier than other co-workers. This resulted in that other people in the team including me were encouraged by his great enthusiasm. We tried our best to work and complete our tasks as soon as possible. Our projects, therefore, were usually accomplished before deadline. Secondly, how do you work with irresponsible co-workers? My brother, who work in a bank, usually complains about his colleagues. Since they usually leave their position during working hours for personal activities, they donââ¬â¢t fulfill their tasks, hence my brother have to help them to carry out their ones. Consequently, for me, being responsible is always considered to be a vital trait that every co-workers needs to possess. Last but not least, friendly co-workers will create a friendly and comfortable working atmosphere that can increase the interest of employees in their job. For example, I was pressurized greatly into doing my projects one year ago. However, by communicating with friendly colleagues, I felt more relaxed and was able to perform the project completely. Furthermore, since we are friendly people, our team are capable of collaborating more efficiently. Thus, our projects are usually finished quickly. In conclusion, although I have not had many chances to work with various people yet, there may be more other characteristics to define a great colleague. However, I believe that a person who possesses enthusiastic, responsible and friendly qualities is definitely a great colleague.
Riblets and Tripwires and their role in reducing drag over underwater Essay
Riblets and Tripwires and their role in reducing drag over underwater aerofoils - Essay Example Their optimal specifications, mechanism of functioning and potential applications for drag reduction over underwater aerofoils have also been dealt with. Riblets and tripwires In case of underwater vehicles, fluid mechanical drag (hydrodynamic drag) reduces the speed with which they travel through water. For a specific limit of engine power, the maximum speed that can be attained by the vehicle is drastically reduced due to the formation of eddies very close to the surface of the vehicle. Apart from this, another source of hydrodynamic drag is the development of pressure drag due to laminar flow at the boundary layers. Riblets can be used to reduce the formation of eddies near the surface of the vehicle, while tripwires can be used to reduce the pressure drag and induce turbulence at the boundary layers. Riblets: These are minute grooves, longitudinally placed on the surface of a vehicle or airfoil, and are in alignment with the direction of flow. They ââ¬Å"have been shown by Walsh and Lindemann [1984] at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Reidy and Anderson [1988] at the Naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC) to produce as much as 8 percent turbulent flow drag reduction on flat platesâ⬠.1 Studies on ââ¬Å"fully submerged axisymmetric bodiesâ⬠1 conducted by Beauchamp and Philips [1986 and 1987], have shown that the use of riblets reduces skin friction by seven percent.1 Tripwires: Tripwires, also known as turbulators, are thin wires that are attached at the hull of a vehicle or at the nose of a submarine or aircraft. These are used to ââ¬Å"tripâ⬠or disturb the boundary layer and introduce turbulence, thereby reducing pressure drag. These are ââ¬Å"one of the oldest and most used methods of turbulence stimulationâ⬠.2 1. Mechanism To comprehend the mechanism of functioning of riblets and tripwires, it is essential to understand the types of drag imposed on a vehicle and the process of their induction. The total drag experienced by a body, includes a combination of pressure and friction. The frictional drag can be reduced by using smooth surfaces. However, studies have shown that this form of drag is further reduced with the help of riblets. The boundary layer of flow around a vehicle can be distinguished into three parts, ââ¬Å"a relatively small viscous sublayer, the middle buffer layer and the logarithmic layerâ⬠.3 The riblets that are used to reduce drag ââ¬Å"extend into the buffer layer. With this kind of riblets a drag reduction of about 8-10%â⬠has been achieved. This is because the riblets restrain the movement of eddies, which are prevented from coming very close, within 50 microns, to the surface of the aircraft or vehicle. ââ¬Å"By keeping the eddies this tiny distance away, the riblets prevent the eddies from transporting high-speed fluid close to the surface, where it decelerates and saps the aircraft's momentumâ⬠.4 To reduce the pressure drag over a vehicle, tri pwires are used. Pressure drag occurs when there is a ââ¬Å"lack of pressure recovery on the back of the body, due to separation of the flow around the bodyâ⬠.5 This results from laminar flow in the boundary layer around the vehicle. By using tripwires, it is possible to induce turbulence in this laminar layer, thereby reducing pressure drag. 2. Optimal Specifications The extent of drag reduction is found to increase with the size of riblets. However, for very

Photography - Essay Example This saw magazines increasing in number, with a peak in 20th century; between 19820s and 1980s. However, the increased use of internet, there has been a decline in print media. However the impact of some important images still resonates from century to century. During the twentieth century, documentary and fine art photography were accepted by English-speaking gallery system and art world. In United States, the pioneer photographers like Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston had spent their lives in advocating for photography to be used as fine art. This saw a culminating moment for photography in 1910 for both pictorialism and photography after Albright Gallery from Buffalo purchased 15 photographs. This marked the initial point for recognition of photography as an art, and was worthy of being collecting for museum representation. This paper analyzes photographs, with an explanation given for each photograph chosen (Lucie-Smith 57). Cartier-Bressonââ¬â¢s used photography to represent individual moments in time through freezing, holding and recreating them. Due to this approach, Cartier-Bresson has been perceived as the pioneer of photojournalism. This responded to accuracy spontaneity and ephemeral racing tempo for modern culture. The photomontage, Roving Reporter, represents the modern technologies that have played a critical role in transforming the world by influencing the ability of people to communicate. The camera eyed colossal observer demonstrates the ability of photography in altering and enhancing senses. During the early 20th century, such medium provided a potential transformative vision for the artists who searched for ways through which they could represent and comprehend the rapidly changing world (Misselbeck 14). The photography had been used extensively to represent the African American body. This replaced the traditional modes that were used

The Instructional Strategy for the Student Essay
The Instructional Strategy for the Student - Essay Example The disability in speech and language slows down his capability to comprehend sounds and language that he is able to listen (Speech and Language Disorders and Diseases, 2009). à I would use visuals and words to meet the needs of the speech and language disabled student. For instance, if I wanted to teach this student what a house was, I would show him the picture of a house with the word ââ¬Å"houseâ⬠written under the picture of the house. I would then proceed to break down the visual of the house to its various components such as the door, windows, walls, floor, etc. each with the respective words under them and show these visuals to the student until he has thoroughly understood them. à The speech and language disabled student will have some problems in understanding what he is being taught with pictures and words. However, he will soon master the art of identifying the house with the word ââ¬Å"houseâ⬠beneath the picture. Although he is speech and language disabled, he is not completely deaf and dumb. He is capable of producing sounds. He is also capable of recognizing the outlines in the pictures being shown to him. à The speech and language disabled student will have a problem with different languages. For instance, if I show him the picture of the house with the word ââ¬Å"houseâ⬠written below the picture in English, he will soon master the English language as well. However, if I used the words in other languages he may have to be taught all over again. In this case, it will be a challenge like the one experienced by a person learning a new language. à The strategy or activity chosen could be challenging because there is no guarantee that one strategy could work for all the speech and language disabled students. One strategy could work for one student, but for another student, I may have to use another strategy that may be successful only with the second student.
